It is important to begin with a careful study of your space requirements to discover the full potential of a small plot of land. Narrow or constrained plots can be a challenge when designing a new home, however it also brings out the most unique and beautiful spaces once skilfully designed.
This newly constructed home was built on a narrow and stretched plot of land with only 6 perch situated in the sub-urban context of Matthedoga, Sri Lanka.
The challenge was to come up with a design that will fit within the limited space available and to meet all the requirements of the client.
The double heighted, gable roof structure is one of the essential features of this design which combines with the façade and creates an impression of a commodious house.
The ground floor comprises living, dining, kitchen, guest bedroom and bathroom areas. The ingenious use of glass and limited walls have created an open plan design which accommodates connectivity of the main spaces without crowding them. First floor comprises Two Bedrooms, and a lavish family living area used for recreation.
Light is essential when dealing with smaller spaces. A well-lit space can give the impression of vastness without the actual footprint size. Space designed to let in natural light and air to become a calm, relaxed and cooling retreat. The interior spaces have been methodically organised to establish this atmosphere as well as to meet the clients’ specifications. Glass windows taken from floor to ceiling allows the small space to open and visually connect to the outdoors.
Ultimately, The Combination of the earthy colour, form and simple finishing touches has created a calm and harmonious flow between nature and human habitat.
